Who could have predicted that a passing mention of dental implants in a medical engineering lecture would ignite a new career path? For Mehreen Zia, a 3D-printing enthusiast with a sincere interest in healthcare, it was the catalyst for an unforeseen journey into dental technology.

"I've always been drawn to the medical field," Mehreen explains, her eyes lighting up as she recounts her journey. Her unwavering passion for healthcare, evident in her every word, is truly inspiring. "But dental technology? It wasn't even on my radar until I started working as a sedation admin at the Leeds Dental Institute."

There, Mehreen discovered the hidden world of dental technicians - the unsung heroes crafting the smiles we see daily. "Most people know about dentists and dental nurses," she laughs, "but technicians? We're like the secret agents of the dental world!"

Now, fresh out of a three-year course and three weeks into her full-time role at Nexus Dental Lab, Mehreen is diving headfirst into the intricate world of CAD design and 3D printing. Her days are filled with urgent cases, complex designs, and the constant challenge of translating 2D scans into perfect 3D models.

"It's like solving a puzzle every day," she beams, pointing to her computer screen. "You have to spot inconsistencies in the scans, identify the right margins for crowns, and sometimes even design abutments from scratch. It's a challenge, but it's a challenge I relish! And when you see the final product, a perfect 3D model that fits the patient's needs, it's incredibly rewarding."

Mehreen is particularly excited about her latest project—a cantilever bridge with two zirconia crowns. "It's the most complex thing I've worked on so far," she admits. But that's what I love about this job. Every day brings something new to learn."

Mehreen's excitement is palpable when she discusses the future of dental technology. "The digital aspect is really taking off," she explains. "It's fascinating to see how it's streamlining certain processes. But what truly excites me is the potential for new materials and techniques, particularly in areas like denture making where traditional methods still hold sway." Her enthusiasm is infectious, leaving us with a sense of optimism about the future of dental technology.

Despite her focus on cutting-edge technology, Mehreen always keeps sight of the human element of her work. "Knowing that something I've designed has boosted someone's confidence or improved their quality of life—that's what it's all about," she says softly. Her compassion for her patients is truly touching. "It's why I wanted to work in healthcare in the first place." Her dedication to improving patients' lives reminds us of the human impact of dental technology.

As our chat winds down, I can't resist asking Mehreen about her dream dental innovation. Her answer is practical and touching: "I'd love to create the perfect denture," she says thoughtfully. "Something comfortable, durable, and aesthetically pleasing. Losing your teeth can be such a difficult part of ageing. If we could make that transition easier and more positive for people, wouldn't that be amazing?"

This blend of technical skills, innovative thinking, and genuine compassion makes Mehreen a perfect fit for the evolving world of dental technology. As she heads back to her workstation, I'm left with a newfound appreciation for the artistry and care that goes into every smile.

The dental tech world may be hidden from view, but with passionate professionals like Mehreen at the helm, its future is looking brighter than ever.
